"MLK Song", from Mavis Staples' new album with M. Ward

Mavis Staples is 76, and she's on a hot streak! The singer already had her name carved in the halls of gospel music history, but the run of albums she's put out since 2007 on ANTI- Records has been a huge success. The new Livin' On A High Note, produced by M. Ward and featuring songs written by Benjamin Booker, Tune-Yards, Justin Vernon, and Nick Cave (!), is one of the best of the bunch - Jeff Tweedy's production on the two previous albums was great, but Ward's exquisite work makes every track distinct and highly memorable.

The album's closer was written together with Ward, and on it Staples reflects on what she'll have to show when she stands for judgement on the last day - not just as a gospel singer, but as an agitator and warrior in the struggle for civil rights. Listen below.
