Tom Waits covers Blind Willie Johnson: listen to "The Soul of a Man"

We haven't heard anything from Tom Waits since 2011's Bad as Me (and those poems he wrote about the homeless), but he broke the silence recently, contributing two tracks to God Don't Never Change: The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson, Alligator Records' new tribute to the extraordinary and foundational gospel bluesman. The compilation is loaded with excellent contributions from other artists like Blind Boys of Alabama and Lucinda Williams, but the affinity with the downtrodden Waits has nursed his whole career gives his versions of "The Soul of a Man" and "John the Revelator" something of the hard-scrabble rawness that made Johnson so electrifying. Listen to "The Soul of a Man" below.
